Doing a job right means having the proper tools. Just like a carpenter needs hammers, saws, and nails to build a house, kids need tools to learn. We use whiteboards to learn letter formation, spelling, punctuation, and to solve math problems. Two-color counters, dice, and other math manipulatives support early numeracy and help my students develop critical problem-solving skills. Art supplies like markers, crayons, and paints bring color to our world and let my students express themselves.
In the age of coronavirus, my students will no longer be able to share materials and use communal supplies as we have in the past. Each child will need to have his/her own tools and supplies to support them as they learn. The added expense of purchasing individual tools means that my limited supply budget is stretched thin.
