My students need instruments! My school district is in year three of having intermediate schools for 5th and 6th grade. I came in as a brand new teacher in January 2018 and have been trying to build up this new music program with age appropriate instruments and materials. When I first came in, we had very few instruments so I have been buying more with my school budget each year, but it is a slow process.
I'm trying to give my students experiences with instruments many of them did not play in their elementary schools. We will be using the drumsticks for bucket drumming, and the cajon, cymbals, and other instruments to experiment and create different sounds and rhythms!
Percussion instruments add so much to music! They reinforce reading and listening skills as students need to know not only their part in the music, but everyone else's as well in order to create the atmosphere and magic of the moment! They can also be used to create different sounds in nature from thunder and lightning to tiny crickets, and I want to give my students these opportunities to discover this world of sounds.
