My students are all living below the level of poverty, so they depend on the classroom and the teacher to provide an enriching environment. As kindergartners, they were eager to learn and had so many questions. But, something sad happens to them by the time they reach sixth grade. Their natural curiosity and love of learning has dwindled. At the beginning of the year, only a few students say that they enjoy school.
For that reason, I try to provide as many interactive, hands-on, and collaborative experiences as possible. By the middle of the year, my students are rarely absent and some parents are awe-struck as their child begs to go back to school after a dental appointment. By the end of the year, most of my students not only enjoy learning, but have started taking ownership of it.
