At the beginning of the year, I asked my students to share a quote that inspired them. One of my students wrote down, "Read to lead," and it made me feel so inspired to get my students more excited about reading and to share the power it holds in our lives. Although I teach math, science, and social studies, that does not mean that literacy and reading is any less a part of my job. I want to create a space where students feel compelled and excited to read so that they in turn can lead! Because I teach in a low-income area, the access to good books and a comfortable and safe reading atmosphere is limited.
My students deserve a space where they feel safe, comfortable, and happy diving into a good book. The thought of reading often times makes my students cringe, and I want to change that for them. When we have a good book and a joyous place to read, it can make all the difference. Therefore, I have added items to help create a comfortable, joyous, and safe space for my students to be in the classroom. This space would need a carpet, storage for books, comfortable/flexible seating, and other decorative things such as pillows and lights, to give students a more at home feeling. We all know the best place to cozy up with a good book is in an environment that feels comfortable, and that is what I want to use they objects to create for my students. Please consider giving to my project so that I can help my students grow to love to read, and ultimately, to love to learn!
