Flexible seating is a hot topic right now in education for a reason! Learning spaces with a variety of seating options where students can move their bodies is proven to improve academic performance. The balance balls, wobble chairs, and chair bands will be used at desks and tables for my kiddos to choose from. Chair bands are essentially gigantic rubber bands that wrap around the front two legs of regular desk chairs for students to bounce their feet on. The bed risers will be used to lift up desks for those that work better standing.
According to Dieter Breithecker at Germany's Federal Institute for Posture and Mobilisation Support, flexible seating can remedy students' fatigue, as the brain activity slows down when the body becomes stationary.
It also encourages collaboration and a sense of responsibility among students, which leads me to the books that I've chosen. I want my students to read about characters that show responsibility, leadership, collaboration, confidence, kindness, and perseverance. These are skills and traits that are essential for our students to learn about and develop.
