In my Intermediate Autism classroom I teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. In addition to teaching three different grades, my students' reading levels and reading skills range vastly. In order to meet each of my student's individual reading level my classroom needs to be stocked with materials for K-5.
Teaching my special education students to read will help them become more independent, self-sufficient citizens. Investing in my students' reading, is investing into their future.
Reading and creating social stories is a teaching strategy for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Without learning to read they are unable to access these tools independently. This only one example of the necessity for my students to learn how to read.
