I have found one of the biggest challenges for students as they move from kindergarten to first grade is the increase in structure in their school day. I have always started my school day giving my students morning work. Although I have tried to differentiate the work as much as possible, it isn't always perfect. There are students that aren't challenged enough and students who struggle.
Having my struggling students in mind, I hate the idea of starting their school day already feeling defeated. This being said, I would like these materials to move away from the traditional pencil/paper morning work and into "morning tubs". I would organize the materials listed below into various containers and the students would be assigned a container for each day of the week. Students would use the Legos, Gears, TinkerToys, and InterLocking Squares together to problem solve and work together creatively to build various objects. The StoryCubes would be used to help inspire students to write creatively and practice their developing writing skills. While Boggle would be used for students to practice building the various taught words in our ELA curriculum.
Additionally, I would like to offer students more flexible seating options in my classroom. Instead of sitting at their desks, the students could sit on the Soft Seats or Wobble Chairs during instruction. I would use the seat cushions to benefit my students with specific sensory needs. I feel that allowing choice and movement during instruction will help maximize student learning.
