My band students are quite diverse both racially and economically. Many don't speak English in the home, so they have become bilingual out of necessity. Our band program must often subsidize expenses for students, because their family income is barely subsistence level. The families are proud, and value education for their children. Our schools strive continually to better the environment in which they learn, and give these children the skills to better their lives.
