In our ever-changing world, students of all backgrounds need to be exposed to stories that open up their eyes to the world around them so that they can build empathy and understanding for their peers and the people within their community. It is never too early to instill tolerance and acceptance in children.
Reading books about people from other cultures will increase cultural awareness, and help us become more respectful towards people with different backgrounds and perspectives.
Furthermore, I want my students to have access to literature from various cultures so that students can see that even though our cultural experiences may vary, we all have we all possess feelings of happiness, anger, pride, and loneliness. Lastly, a variety of good-quality, multicultural books will help to distinguish stories that are purely stereotypical vs stories that are written by people of the specific culture; reading great books helps to dispel misconceptions and inaccurate stereotypes.
