The research is in. Regular readers are critical thinkers who can excel on today's standardized tests, succeed in college and careers, and make a difference in today's changing world. Furthermore, critical thinkers are collaborators, and engaged communication inspires creativity and change. High interest texts allow students to personally connect with literature in ways that are meaningful and relevant to their changing selves and world. Reading is transformative.
By donating to my classroom, you will help to foster a love of reading in my 9th graders, guide them to improve their critical thinking skills, offer them a vehicle for collaboration, and inspire them to make meaningful connections and changes in their own lives and in the world.
Flexible seating (3 bean bags) and a comfortable classroom library space will promote reading by making both students and books central aspects of the classroom. The 15 best-selling, high interest titles that reflect diversity on my list will complement the 20 titles I've recently gifted them on my own to start a classroom library they will be proud of. The rug will tie the space together and allow more students to collaborate while reading.
