These journals (along with journals of students who can bring their own) will be used in the creative writing classroom as a place for students to vent, to be creative, to ask questions, to clear their heads, to write their stories. For example, I'll give students a poem as a prompt, let's say Mary Oliver's "Summer Day," with its ending question, "What will you do with your one wild and precious life? Students will respond in their journals -- either in writing or artwork -- and we'll share the next day in class.
Writing can be healing. It often is. Such sharing builds trust and rapport. Such creative work addresses many of the mental and emotional needs of students. Given trauma of the last few years, I want to give my students an opportunity to seek out and find the calm writing and art bring. I want them to engage in positive thinking, forward thinking. I want them to feel free to be who they are by inviting them to express exactly that, and share within the group.
