Our students need to have time to read both for enjoyment and information. As a reading teacher, I want to deepen and enrich their reading experiences. When readers are given time to respond to a book such as the requested Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, they make the ideas encountered in the literature personally meaningful, and they are able to extend those ideas in a variety of ways. Through talking about books with others, the students gain a deeper understanding of the book and how it can become a significant part of their life experiences. Discussing a piece of literature in a group setting with others gives the students an opportunity to hear what others gleaned from the reading. It also allows them to expand, enhance, and enrich their understanding of the piece of literature just from hearing other's interpretations. We need our students to become readers who think critically and deeply about what they read. Real world literature helps students become more literate. Also, literature will provide our students with an important way of learning about the world. Incorporating S.T.E.A.M with the literature not only entertains but educates. It stretches their imagination, allowing them to see their world through Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Having a class set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will provide my students with multiple opportunities to respond to literature. We will be able to recognize and discuss plot elements, character traits, see how characters change throughout the story, and many more reading skills that are important to reading growth in 5th graders. The S.T.E.A.M portion of our novel study will encourage the student to think outside the box. We will be using everyday materials and completing challenges engaging the students with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
