Flexible seating will allow my students to be comfortable, show classroom ownership, and make choices that are the best for them. Currently my students have old desks to work at. I believe students work best when they can have choice in their learning. Our current classroom rug is stained, fraying at the edges, and uninviting. When I give my students choice it their seating/chair choice, the majority of the time they choose to work in a different location around the room such as: on the floor with a clipboard, laying under a desk, at the group area, or at a learning table. I see most of my students choosing alternative seating and being highly engaged when they are able to make an independent choice.
I want all students to have the ability to chose a comfortable chair choice and I believe it will keep my students engaged.
The materials that I have selected such as the group rug and wobble chairs will help students who need to move their body while working do so without distracting others. Also, some students enjoy sitting and working on the floor so they will be able to continue with their work comfortably using the portable lap trays.
