For this project, our students will work collaboratively to develop an app that will act as a comprehensive response plan in the event of a school emergency. This app will enable faculty to efficiently initiate a lockdown, communicate vital information, establish next-step procedures, and ensure student safety with administrators and first responders from any location. There are similar apps available; however, they are either prohibitively expensive or limited in their capabilities. Furthermore, as our students develop this app, they will also develop a website that will chronicle their procedures and contain their source code so that they can share this information with other schools that wish to tailor this solution to fit their needs. Finally, students will work on applying existing technologies to further protect the windows in their classroom doors. This authentic, real-world problem-solving opportunity will help foster these students' passion for STEM and community service, while also creating a safer school for their peers.
