Adding flexible seating to my classroom will open up many opportunities for my students. The students will have the choice to pick their seating. Children learn best when they have some control over their environment. During work time students can pick to stand, use a ball chair, wobble chair, or relax on soft seating. Flexible seating opens the door to community. Students learn to take turns, share supplies, and collaborate with peers around them. Flexible seating allows students to easily pair up or work in groups naturally. Students can sit, kneel, wiggle, lean, roll, etc., and release excess energy, while building core strength with chairs that allow movement. When students are comfortable they are more relaxed and better able to focus. This opportunity leads to student motivation. Students are motivated to keep working in their favorite spots and dive deeper into their learning. I have seen student engagement go up and undesired behavior go down when students have the simple choice of flexible seating to help them engage and be an active learner throughout the school day.
