Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. In my classroom, students are able to make choices throughout the day for different seating options. Currently, my students have had options that range from pillows to bathroom rugs to bean bag chairs. They are often sitting on the floor using clipboards or lap trays to complete their work. I have seen how much more engaged my students are when they are able to choose a location around the room to help them do their best work.
Having lots of flexible seating options is also very motivating for students as well. I have found that the majority of the time they make good choices about choosing where to sit, are more engaged, and can accomplish more than when they are just sitting at their tables. Some resources I am seeking include bungee chairs, bean bag chairs, and rugs. All of these items create an inviting environment and allow students to sit and work comfortably around the room. I am also seeking a divider which I will use to create a reading nook. Students love curling up in small places to read!
Students feel empowered and are more invested when they are given choices in their own school environment. It is my hope to add to my classroom in order to foster that empowerment and investment.
