Math is more than just memorizing facts. The tools such as the Geoboards, base ten blocks, and arrays will be used to help students understand multiplication and division concepts. These tools will be used by the students to make connections and visualize story problems. Using interactive tools will also help students understand the relationships between different math concepts. The base ten blocks is also a good way for students to develop conceptual understanding as well as mathematical reasoning. All students in the class will benefit from these tools, but they will provide extra support for those who may have a difficult time understanding some concepts.
These tools will allow students the opportunities to explore and really understand math concepts and their relationships. The students in my class learn math in a different language. This means that they will hear and speak about math in Chinese. The language barrier can sometimes hinder their ability to learn math concepts. These tools will be able to aid them as they struggle and challenge themselves to learn these concepts in another language. Having a visual aid will also provide them with support to be able to explain their solutions and understanding. As a teacher, it gives me the tools I need to be able to support their development of math in another language. With 60 students' progress that I need to keep track of, it is beneficial to have the tools I need to support them. I also need tools to keep me organized so that I can better support my students and monitor their learning.
