Everyone knows that reading is essential to success. Boys love to learn, but many of them don't love to read. It really doesn't matter a whole lot WHAT students are reading, but THAT they read. So my goal is to provide a variety of reading materials to engage all my learners. I encourage all students to read anytime they have a few minutes to spare. If they have a book they are willing to read, they will have a better chance of opening it up and reading. Every year, my students beg for graphic novels. Because of the illustrations, it engages the most reluctant readers, but they also tell a good story. The same is true for Jason Reynolds books. I had picked one up from the public library last year, and my boys fought over who would read it first!
