Hands-on learning provides students the opportunity to think beyond pencil and paper. Research has proven that students who are able to learn by doing have a 75% concept retention rate. This is in comparison to a 5% retention rate by concepts taught through lecture, and 30% retention by those taught through demonstration.
STEAM bins provide hands-on learning and collaboration beyond a book or website. Students will be given weekly, if not daily, opportunities to use the materials in my project to creatively collaborate, develop and engineer solutions to real-life scenarios. Materials such as Magformers set, putty, blocks, tape, etc. will give the students tools to design, engineer, and construct solutions to questions posed to students. Materials such as pencil boxes, will allow the students the chance to sort and classify items based off common properties.
Please consider funding this project so every student gets the chance to learn by doing.
