Every year I am presented with students ranging from several years below grade level to slightly above. Whole group instruction just doesn't cut it when it comes to meeting the needs of my students. Small groups and differentiated instruction are vital. This presents obvious classroom management challenges in a classroom with one, or even two, teachers.
Chromebooks are a great tool for implementing small groups and differentiation in the classroom. They allow for small group focused instruction while students with gaps practice prerequisite skills and more advanced students move forward by watching videos of the next topic. This self-directed, self-paced learning is incredibly empowering and motivating to students. When the element of competition is introduced, student engagement sky rockets! Students can even utilize screen recording applications to teach each other, which is the best way to become an expert at a topic.
My district has begun providing very valuable professional development in the area of technology as part of the shift toward 21st Century classrooms. These requested five Asus Chromebook laptop computers will allow me to utilize what I am learning to enhance my students' learning. With your help, maybe I'll even be able to compete with Fortnite!
