Many of my students have only read one or two novels as a class in their career. Most of them are hesitant to pick up a book on their own or defeatedly stare at a book that they have very little interest in. I hope to use a modern novel, A Monster Calls Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd, to inspire my group of reluctant readers into discussion about the themes and lessons this title dives into. I want to show them that there are more exciting stories out there besides 鈥淭he Diary of a Wimpy Kid鈥 (although I do love those!). I believe this will be one of the books they remember reading and recount to their children one day!
