Young children need an alternative to sitting at desks throughout the day. A rug offers appropriate seating for group instruction. This type of seating will provide the opportunity for varied seating throughout the school day. For example, when I teach from the easel, the students will move to designated squares facing the easel. When I teach from the floor, they will move to the outer squares around the carpet so the students can see the materials. They will also be able to turn and talk to their partners in class discussion. Having their own space is very important for classroom management, as well.
