Within our two classrooms, we have already begun to implement limited flexible seating by providing students seating options that include desks, tables, stools, exercise balls, and floor seating with clipboards. By providing this for students we have seen an increase in student engagement within the classroom. We would like to expand on the flexible seating we have implemented in our classroom by purchasing wobble stools, additional yoga balls, wiggle seats, and Big Joe flame retardant bean bag chairs. These items will allow our students to move while focusing on the lessons in class.
Within our two classrooms, we have a very diverse student population. All of our students have individualized education plans for cognitive or social-emotional disabilities. To help enhance our students learning environment we are attempting to create a space that allows for comfortable learning by providing opportunities for movement and choice while learning.
In addition to providing students options to take ownership of where they are sitting and movement opportunities, a room with flexible seating also provides for comfort while learning.
