The two-row rekenreks will allow students to learn new strategies and practice old strategies for addition and subtraction math facts to 20. This will increase their fact recall / fluency which is so important to all future math concepts. The ten-row rekenrek will help them connect these strategies to numbers 100 and greater and lead to improved automaticity with two- and 3-digit addition and subtraction.
Rekenreks will move students from being concrete thinkers into representational and abstract thinkers. Many students resort to finger counting simply because they lack the experiences that provide them number sense.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them visual and concrete materials to practice various strategies and become flexible thinkers. They will be used in whole group, small group and by individual students. They will allow each child become a teacher and share his/her own strategy with peers.
I am eager to use these with my students and just as excited to see how my little ones explain their thinking while using the rekenreks. I thank you in advance!
