Student desks are very limiting to the type of environment that I want to cultivate in my classroom. Desks make students feel separate and distant, and many times uncomfortable.
My students will be asked to peer-tutor, collaborate on high-ordered thinking assignments, and really engage in the academic conversations going on in the classroom. They will also have the table space to construct hands-on projects that an individual desk does not afford them.
One of my students’ favorite projects in my Geometry class is the construction of 3-D scale models of real-world architecture. This process is so difficult for the students due to our lack of table space. I feel the students frustration with this restriction. So much problem-solving goes into this process that easing the physical constraints would help!
