Middle school students are at a crucial part of "growing up". Making text-to-self connections to a book allows students to relate to the characters and perhaps even help them through a personal experience.
In today's world, students are experiencing a lot and we need diverse books to help. Through the use of Book Wars, a team book trivia competition, students will be encouraged to read as many books as possible of the provided books.
Roller Girl (a graphic novel), House Arrest (a novel in verse), When Friendship Followed Me Home, Zero Tolerance, Mockingbird, Shadow, and The Honest Truth provides students with characters who have cancer, families experiencing homelessness, dealing with financial family stress, meeting a new forever friend, struggling with Aspergers spectrum disorder, or dealing with a sibling who has significant health concerns. Zero Tolerance even provides students with an example of a honor roll student who gets in trouble and learns a lot from the people she spends time with in detention.
Reading diverse books is a must, for all age readers! Through the use of these books and the Book Wars platform, my sixth graders will be immersed in diverse books!
