This collection of narrative poetry books will show students a collection of mentor texts about characters with whom they identify using beautiful poetic language to tell their stories. These books deal with young adult issues that my students grapple with daily.
So many teens lack confidence in their writing and their ability to tell their own stories; I want these books to show them that it is possible. Over time, I hope for students to understand that not only is writing their story possible; it is important to becoming empathetic adults in a world with far too little.
We will read "The Poet X," "Long Way Down," "No Matter the Wreckage" and more in social book clubs to encourage dialogue and personal writing of our own stories in a way that asks others for self-examination.
