English Language Learners who are also Deaf and Hard of Hearing learn through visual models like videos, pictures, and animation. Often, our students struggle with comprehension because they don't have the experience or a mental representation of a word or a concept. When this happens we might use a computer to look up picture representations, but this process is usually not individualized, due to lack of equipment. We hope that the addition of iPads will allow us to expose our students to more vocabulary and more concepts, which will help to assist their overall learning.
iPads will afford us the opportunity for individualized learning in grades k-5.
Students can work independently on IEP goals related to literacy, math, grammar, or speech and language. iPad apps are generally fun and vivid, which our students require for motivation and unique learning styles. Students able to work independently will also allow us to make smaller groups to target areas of need for more effective instruction.
