A colleague of mine and I implemented a new way to start our day this year. We learned about this new concept, called Morning Choice, at a conference she and I attended earlier in the school year. During Morning Choice, the kids are allowed to play board games or participate in STEM activities. All of these different activities are in place of morning work, which is worksheets completed by students during the time before the bell rings to officially start the day.
Once we implemented Morning Choice, we knew we were never going back to boring worksheets! Morning Choice has helped my classroom tremendously this year. Absenteeism has always been a problem in my classroom and my school in general. Since I implemented Morning Choice, it is no longer an issue. I have also found my students to be more prepared, alert, and ready to start their day after Morning Choice. In addition, my students have learned to play and work with each other through Morning Choice activities. Their attitudes toward school have improved so much since I started this concept!
I would love to be able to have more of the traditional board games such as Monopoly, Clue, Life, Operation, Scrabble, Battleship, Kerplunk, and Yahtzee. There is also a big push to include more science in the curriculum so they would love the STEM activities like K鈥橬ex, Rush Hour Traffic Jam, circuit kit, brain games, and straw constructors. The giant tumbling timbers would be amazing for Morning Choice, as well as great fun for all kinds of math activities! I have seen what a great addition to my classroom Morning Choice has been, and cannot wait to see what these new activities could bring to my classroom!
