At CFJH, we have a half acre garden & orchard that serves students of two schools. About 900 students have the chance to explore and enjoy our outdoor classroom. We grow various edible plants to teach students about nutrition and gardening. Having dehydrators will allow us to enhance our garden program by giving us the opportunity to efficiently harvest and store the food that we grow.
Having dehydrators will allow us to safely preserve produce harvested from our garden for use throughout the school year in many classrooms. In Family & Consumer Sciences, kids will learn how to make fresh fruit leather. In Garden Club, students will make dehydrated veggie chips using carrots, beets and kale from the garden. In Social Studies classes, students will cook using dehydrated herbs, tomatoes, corn, and beans in cultural units. Hundreds of apples, pears and plums from our experimental cold-zone research orchard will be preserved so students can enjoy them throughout the year!
