My students need a boost to entice their interest in reading. At our school, we set aside reading time every day, every other week. The difficulty is not having enough books that interest them, specifically classroom sets. My school media center does a fabulous job by providing some class sets, but guided reading books and high interest literature are specific supports for my special needs, low readers.
Struggling readers have a look of defeat on their faces every time they pickup a book to read. With guided reading, they can gain the confidence to read and be provided the support to become better readers. High interest books such as The Hate U Give, a multi-award winning novel, is perfect for small group read-alouds, a proven strategy to improve reading comprehension. My students will be excited to start their journey to become successful readers.
