Hurricane Harvey took most of the furniture in my classroom, including the backpack holders my Dad built for my students my first year of teaching. We are requesting new lockers. Students enjoy having their own special place to hang their backpacks and a place their lunch kits every morning. They also like to have a place where they can access extra school supplies whenever needed.
Having their personal space creates that feeling of "home away from home". Students have the comfort of knowing their personal items are close by and accessible. This in turn, creates a classroom environment where students feel safe and are more likely to become successful learners.
