Many of my students who experience Sensory Processing Disorder (this is very common in individuals with Autism) or have heightened sensory needs, struggle with attending to tasks. Providing my students with work that can be facilitated using sensory components like visual and tactile experiences will allow them an opportunity to explore sensory-based practices in a desirable and functional way.
Integrating sensory-based practices into students work environment, is done as a way to allow students who have more sensory-based needs to be engaged in the learning process while being provided with designated forms of sensory stimulation. The sensory materials such as a lightbox, desk fidgets, and translucent shapes, letters and numbers will provide my students with tools that are appropriate for sensory regulation and visual and tactile supports that will greatly aid in their learning process.
