An urban, public school classroom services students with a wide variety of learning needs. This project will help students feel comfortable, as they engage in rigorous writing tasks, each day. We all work our best when given choice of where and how to physically work through our days. 80 minute class blocks can be draining if you must sit at short desks in a hard chair, with no opportunity to move.
Studies show that all focus better when given the chance to move their bodies while exercising their minds. Students with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and ADD are more successful when offered opportunities to sit, with compression in bean bag chairs, or to stand at a tall desk. By having a variety of options, not only will I be able to help these types of learners, but I will also be able to engage reluctant 8th graders who often developmentally struggle to find the enthusiasm to learn.
When middle-schoolers feel they have autonomy and choice, they tend to compromise a bit easier with the adults who constantly tell them what to do! Requests for headphones to quiet excess noise, lap desks to sit on the floor and work, and standing desks have been pouring in, and hopefully you can help me give my students what they need!
