Our school is embarking on a new program called "Makerspace Activities." Makerspace activities will allow time for our students to be more creative and use their higher-order thinking skills to solve problems and design. The tools will be provided at stations, the problem will be stated and the students will work in groups to complete the activity. Examples of activities: program a robot, use of an I-pad to take a virtual field trip using specific programs, solve math problems with the Osmo Genius, design the houses of the Three Little Pigs using legos, coding a Sphero to roll and etc.
Using computers, Osmo Geniuses and iPads in the various activities will allow the students' interactive experiences and visual problem-solving skills. It could be called creative play and not only will the students have loads of fun, they will be progressing at their own pace and increasing their levels of Math and Science skills.
While the students are having educational fun and learning, the activities will also increase the abilities of our students to work cooperatively with their peers. The activities will require the students to compromise, agree and set to work to fulfill the activity requirements.
