I am requesting K'NEX kits, simple machines kits, solar energy kits, bridge building kits, and brain challenges to help me create a STEM program for my fourth grade students. My students would greatly benefit from the opportunity to build and create structures that can help them understand the intricacies of things they see every day.
Many of our students do not have home access to the different K'NEX and building kits that have been requested, and this would give them an opportunity for hands-on learning and development of skills that will carry into eventual careers. My students participate in weekly labs that cover the standard fourth grade TEKS, but many clamor for extra labs and background information on a variety of subjects that would be best served by a STEM program.
I currently have stations in my classroom that allow the students to explore topics such as circuits, electromagnetism, and conductivity. I would love to have the proper supplies and kits to create STEM challenges and have students create teams to attempt the weekly challenges before school and during their study time in the afternoon. My classroom has some simple challenges that require items found around the house, and while I add more items as I am able to, I am not able to keep pace with their voracious appetite for more!
My kids absolutely light up when it's lab day and I want to provide them with more opportunities to explore the world of Science. Seeing their minds grow through experiments is extremely rewarding and I hope to ignite a passion for learning in each one of them that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
