My students need accessible and engaging tools by I Heart Guts, Loud Lungs,Sinus, Big Brain and Tonsil You're Swell along with to pique their interest in anatomy. I love the Giant Microbes brand and bought a giant louse stuffed animal to explain why we don't share headphones in the classroom. I love how although these tools have the "Ewww effect," they are more accessible and not as scary to the little ones. I have been aware of the I Heart Guts brand through Pinterest and I fell in love with their products. I first decided to try and get these tools for my classroom when my Kinder class was completing a Growth Mindset activity. The last step was "color a brain." One of my boys told me, "Ms. Santillan, brains are kind of gross." This sparked something fantastic! I explained that even though it may look gross, it's function and abilities are amazing. From this, I started thinking about how amazing it would be for the students to hug the stuffed brain before a test or to stretch out the stuffed muscle to talk about what is happening on the playground. The teeth would be amazing for dental hygiene week and for teaching students how to floss. The uses for these tools are limitless but the thing I love about this brand is that these stuffed animals are not scary. I don't foresee my 5 and 6-year-olds being frightened by these tools, the way they may be by a photograph. After school, we work with 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students.I plan on using these tools as jumping off platforms for anatomy studies. These students are, generally, not encouraged to exercise at home or to eat healthily. Health and nutrition are part of the requirements for after school and I think it is important for students to understand their anatomy in order to understand why you want to protect it.
