By starting with Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give, I will invite to students to think about their own pasts of overcoming obstacles so that as we delve into the Diaspora, they will make connections between the lives of young African Americans today and the lives of those who came before.Students will read at least three major novels or similar-length works in our semester together as part of a course called "African Genesis & Diaspora." In short, reading this book is about building connections to these older texts and making learning relevant. Students will use this book as our first anchor text.
