Good books for children are the ones that are never on our shelves. Great books for children are the ones that are returned read! At our school, graphic novels fit that bill.
Graphic novels help support readers who are transitioning from picture books to novels. At our library, we believe that picture books are for everyone. Even so, our children need to read widely and build the stamina and comprehension and joy that will turn them into lifelong readers.
Graphic novels are beloved by many readers. Our artists, our dreamers, our English-as-a-second-language learners, our students who still struggle to imagine what they are decoding in that glorious thought bubble world that avid readers always have at the ready-- and our omnivorous readers who ingest all literature to build their super strength.
Dogman, Hi-Lo, Thea & Geronimo Stilton, Plants vs. Zombies, A Wrinkle in Time, Percy Jackson, Super Diaper Baby and more will leap tall buildings (or ride a UPS van) and arrive at our library thanks to you, our heroes.
Note: Any student may borrow from our graphic novel section, not just 3rd-5th grade students.
