The large majority of my students do not have access to quality, if any, fitness equipment and often times going outside for a walk, run or bike is not ideal due to challenges within their neighborhoods. My goal is to provide a fitness room with cardio machines, free weights and yoga mats where my students can improve their fitness and health knowledge in a safe and supportive environment.
As the sole health teacher in my school, I believe that learning happens with hands on application. When learning about the cardiovascular system, it makes sense to be able to see the cardiovascular system in action. When learning about muscle fibers, it makes sense to use weights to illustrate ideas.
Getting my students to understand and value their own fitness and wellness benefits not only themselves but the community as a whole. Without fitness and wellness, learning ceases and students are unable to focus. The benefits between physical, mental and emotional well and academic success are numerous and well documented. I'm looking to provide my students with fitness opportunities that they otherwise would not have in their home environments.
