Can you imagine sitting in a room and not being able to communicate your need to use the restroom? You keep trying to get out of your chair, but your teacher keeps saying "Wait, it's not lunchtime yet." You have no way of telling her you aren't trying to go to the cafeteria, you need the bathroom! You start to vocalize, but your teacher isn't understanding. She hands you a communication book that has 50 pictures on velcro pages. You then must scan through the book until you find the "bathroom picture," pull the image from its velcro page and hand it urgently to your teacher. But wait, alas, your bathroom picture isn't there! Somehow the picture was not placed back in the book. At this point, you are desperate, nature calls. You stand up, move quickly around your teacher, and run towards the restroom. Your teacher is upset and chases you down the hallway. Thankfully, she sees where you are going. Finally, the message clicks in her mind and she knows what you were needing all along.
With an iPad in the classroom, all student communication needs may be met with one or two clicks of a button. The apps available are customized for each students' needs, growing with them as their language expands.
The iPad in this project will be utilized by students to trial new and potentially expensive applications before purchase. The iPad is a means for students to find their voice, practice and demonstrate capability for insurance purposes.
