In this 6-week project, students write, illustrate, assemble, and bind books about their own immigration experiences. After writing and editing their stories, they use card stock paper to make the pages, and glue to paste their drawings and typed drafts onto the pages. They use Sharpies and colored pencils to illustrate each chapter of their journey. Then they bind the books by using an awl and stitching with yarn and yarn needles. While they are working on this project, students keep their work in individual folders to ensure they do not lose any of their materials.
The art of making a book can be a transformative process that teaches students the power of their own voices. Each of my students brings their own story and experience into my classroom. Many are still trying to make sense of the forces that have brought them here to a new country. These materials will help students create something beautiful and lasting out of their own stories.
