With a PocketLab, the process of coming up with accurate data and graphs becomes easier. The immediate visual of an object in motion or the magnitude of a magnetic field will allow students to be more engaged in the process of data collection and analysis. With the emphasis on "doing" science, students need to practice essential skills such as analyzing and interpreting data which can translate to their ability to think for themselves in various subject areas and situations.
Acceleration, in particular, is a difficult concept for students to understand using a regular lab activity involving timers and marbles. If we had a class set, the PocketLab would help students collect better data. The issue of stopping their timer at the correct position goes away and explaining the concept becomes an easier task.
Electricity and magnetism will become easier to "see" with the incorporation of actual numbers that the PocketLab can detect. Instead of just showing that something is happening when dealing with electric current and magnetism, we can finally quantify the phenomenon. Students will have more insight as to what is happening when they have access to the proper information, allowing for better engagement and increased learning outcomes.
