"I get that I should be healthy, but it all tastes gross!" These are the words of a ninth grade student in my nutrition class. This sentiment is shared by many of my students and it is my hope to rewrite this narrative and teach essential life skills in the process.
I intend on having students apply their knowledge of nutrition by selecting healthy recipes, analyzing the nutritional information, practice life skills in preparing the recipe, and by sampling it themselves they will unlearn the myth that "all healthy food tastes gross."
As our school does not have ovens or any cooking supplies these tools will allow our students to become healthy chefs. I have brought in my own personal electric skillet for a project with students last week, yet it was difficult for everyone to contribute with only one cooking device. By having sets of 4 students may work in small groups and be able to participate in the creation themselves and apply these life skills outside of school.
