Chrome books and apple devices are marvelous tools that increase our students' access to knowledge and simulations all over the world. However, I still want my students to develop those valuable skills that come from creative problem solving while playing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) games with other students. To be successful in life now and later, students still have to learn how to get along.
Students learn how to lead and how to follow successfully while playing STEM games. Many of my gifted students in class have leadership abilities that need to be refined. Playing strategic games lets them develop their ideas and then learn how to explain those ideas to others. I want these bright students to learn the finesse needed to convince others to follow. These students can then learn better skills of how to follow by allowing others playing the games to take the lead.
These critical thinking games create situations where all levels of learners can engage and excel. Playing the games will be used as incentives for other students in the school. The gifted class will lead in teaching the other students how to play the games and how to develop thinking strategies to win. All the students involved will benefit by modeling and practicing skills needed for effective leading and following. In addition, we anticipate that practice in problem solving will create better strategies for state test taking.
