My sixth graders are from a diverse neighborhood in North Salt Lake. The neighborhood is a site for many refugee families as well as immigrant families. North Star Elementary is a Title 1 school with historically high performance due to the commitment and dedication of the staff and the surrounding community. It is a national award winning outstanding Community of Caring School.
There are three different languages spoken in our class, 80% of our school population lives at or below the poverty line, and factors in my students' daily lives are often a barrier to their education.
Attendance in my class is above average and my students are interested and engaged in the work we are doing! Our class includes students with special needs, students who have experienced trauma, students who have witnessed and been affected by gang violence, and students who may not have adequate support and resources at home.
