My students design their own labs. I set up supplies and give them the opportunity to ask questions, design their lab, analyze results, and ask more questions. Each lab is different. Each group does things a little differently. Sometimes the way they do things are better than I would have thought to have done it. This lab will allow them to see the results of a genetic cross in real life. It would be a simulation, and it won't be a worksheet. I am excited to see if they come up with more ideas beyond this lab.
Testing and designing labs themselves inspires creativity. It is those who ask the questions who find the answers who will help out everyone else. There have been days where I have abandoned the planned lesson because they had questions. I handed them some supplies and said, "Here you go. You test it. You tell me what you have discovered."
