This is a department wide initiative. The adult tricycles will be used on an almost daily basis to access the communities, businesses and activities in Alamo, Danville and San Ramon.
Uses include transportation to:
- volunteer sites
- work sites
- banking
- food shopping
- trips to nearby venues
- bowling
- restaurants
- home improvement stores
- libraries
-Crayon Initiative
- recycling centers
The bikes also help us provide a service called Delivering Independence. Along with our Speech Pathologist, students take staff lunch orders from Trader Joe's and drink orders for Starbucks on a weekly basis. While this may not seem like much to most of the population where a morning Starbucks is a way of life, it provides our students with many skills. Following specific procedures, using scripts, maintaining guest interaction, accepting and delivering guest orders, proper use of money and retail transactions are just a few of the skills honed with this simple act. Once a month, we provide Starbucks service for the Special Education Department at the district and a select few others.
Additionally, the three wheel stability provides the opportunity for students, whose disabilities may limit their ability to utilized standard bicycles, the experience of riding a cycle......imagine that feeling!
