All of my students have an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis and each have different academic, physical, social, emotional and sensory needs. The term "spectrum" reflects the wide variation of challenges these students experience. Many students with ASD struggle with processing sensory information.
Having resources like seat bands, weighted pads and fidgets will allow me to proactively meet each child's individual sensory need. I have worked very hard to create a safe and comfortable classroom environment, and my end goal is to have a designated area in my classroom that is dedicated to sensory activities. Students will be able to independently enter this area when they feel the classroom environment is too overwhelming or stimulating. In this area, they will be able to interact with a variety of tactile and sensory materials before returning to their academic work.
