I am a teacher in a lower economic district with students who have low emotional regulation, waning support and very high needs, both academically and social/emotional. My district and state as a whole has a budget crisis. Funds have been cut in areas that greatly affect our schools. We are short staffed and far behind with regards to having the right materials to be affective teachers in the technologically savvy age. My students have high anxiety, low attention and a host of social-emotional needs. We are a program designed to help regulate their behavior but it does little to address the other aspects of their needs. I teach all subjects except specials. Needless to say that have a long day.
My students should at the very least come into a class equipped to handle their educational needs as well as capture their attention. They need an audio visual component. These materials will help me to deliver content and instruction to my students in a multimodal way that benefits them. A simple whiteboard with colorful markers does not hold them long enough.
